iPad Pricing and 3G Data Plans
The iPad will be more expensive for Canadians. Here is a table that compares the pricing for Americans in US Dollars, then for Canadians in Canadian dollars, and then the pricing for Canadians adjusted for today’s exchange rate:
Price in USD for US Consumers | Data Plans for 3G Models
Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi + 3G | ||||
16GB | $499.00 | $629.00 | US Consumers
32GB | $599.00 | $729.00 | 250 MB/month | $14.99
64GB | $699.00 | $829.00 | UNLIMITED | $29.99
Price in CAD for Canadian Consumers
Wi-Fi | Wi-Fi + 3G | Canadians
16GB | $549.00 | $679.00 | 250 MB/month | $15.00

64GB | $749.00 | $879.00 | |||

16GB | $538.57 | $666.10 | |||

64GB | $734.77 | $862.30 |
Canadian iPads Are More Expensive Than American iPads
This means that Canadians are paying up to almost $40 more for an iPad than Americans (that’s an 8% premium).
Monthly Data Plans for iPad 3G Models
It’s also worth pointing out that Americans can get UNLIMITED data with AT&T for $5/month LESS than a 5GB/month option with Rogers. Both countries have a 250MB/month option at $15/month, but why the shafting on the top end plans? Now, I realize that most people would not use 5GB of data on an iPad, but the idea of not having the ability to NEVER worry about overages and to have that at a cheaper price to boot is a bummer for Canucks.
Game Changing Multi-Device, Single Data Plan Concept Ruined/Abandoned?
According to The Boy Genius Report, Apple Canada’s website had a small note indicating that for $20/month you could just add your iPad onto your existing data plan you had with a Rogers smartphone. The notion that you could have multiple devices on one data plan had leaked a few weeks ago and was heralded as being a game-changer, but that was when everyone thought it wouldn’t have a $20/month surcharge. Having said that, that note on Apple Canada’s website is now gone, and there is no official mention anywhere about a multi-device data plan. Talk about a missed opportunity. It would’ve been absolutely brilliant for Rogers had they offered the ability to use up data bandwidth from an existing monthly data plan for some other device.
Note that Wi-Fi iPads without 3G do not need monthly data plans at all.

The lack of unlimited data plans in Canada is a mystery.
Rather adding a data plan for each gadget, you can get MiFi which supports up to five devices.

Canada isn't the only country without unlimited data plans. Most european countries don't have them either. The countries that do (the UK and USA) have all had congestion and poor service as users suck away bandwidth without consequence. Since the carriers can't charge more to these bandwidth hogs, they can't reap the money that they could use to build out their networks.
Still, cell phones are too expensive here. Here's to hoping the new entrants as well as eventually removing foreign ownership restrictions brings prices down for Canadian consumers.

Definitely need more competition in Canada to keep the big players' heads out of the clouds.

I called rogers before buying a 3g ipad and was told I could share my data with my existing account for $10 more. Tried to activate my new iPad today only to find out they can’t do it and my only options are 15$ or 35$ prepaid on my credit card, or break up my current family shared plan.
Bottom line:
1) If you call Rogers, don’t expect to get anyone that knows anything about iPad plans. After 4 calls, none of the reps offered the ‘flex fee plans’ listed here: http://www.rogers.com/web/content/ipad-dataplans?cm_sp=Consumer-_-Wireless_0311_Eng-_-iPad2_HOM_PRE_slot1
2) Rogers shared data plans only work with one wireless phone in the bundle. So it’s really not sharing. Don’t buy an iPad expecting to share 2 iPhones & an iPad data on Rogers. It’s not possible.
