Finally, SOME reprieve from those pesky telemarketers who seem to know exactly when you are sitting down to eat dinner, watch your favourite show, or blog about personal finance! :) The much awaited Do Not Call Registry is available to register yourself on for your personal home phone, cellular and fax numbers.
There are some exceptions and here is a list of entities that can still call/fax you:
- Registered charities looking for donations
- Newspapers looking for subscriptions
- Political parties and their candidates
- Companies with whom you have an existing relationship, or have done business with in the past 18 months

But Wait! There’s More…
Exempted organizations are permitted to make unsolicited telephone calls despite the inclusion of the number in the do-not-call registry. However, organizations must remove numbers from their lists if specifically requested to do so.
IOptOut takes advantage of this approach by allowing Canadians to create and manage a personal do-not-call list that begins where do-not-call list ends.

I just tried to visit the DNCL site, and was presented with the following:
“Important Notice
National Do Not Call List (DNCL)
The DNCL Web site is temporarily unavailable. Please try again later.”
I’m guessing that there are a lot of people trying to register their numbers all at once…

@George – thanks for the update, I get the same message. I will amend the post to let others know.

Thanks for the mention. The DNCL list will supersede the iOptOut list. It’s great that finally we have a DNCL registry though the list of exclusions is rather long.

Thanks for posting this. I successfully removed both our number.
