I think I’ve made the mistake of not putting enough “foundation knowledge” posts on this blog (and perhaps not appealing to a larger audience), so you’ve probably noticed that I’ve been experimenting with topics that have more mass appeal – like the posts on Price Vigilantes and Market Mavens for example. Along that vein, I decided to not only change the look of the blog, but also to change up the content slightly. I’m still going to post technical articles (such as the reverse dispersion equity collar), but I’m also going to include video blog entries (like the one on private equity) and starting today: Video Tutorials!
So without further ado, here is a video tutorial on how to look up a stock quote on the internet and further, how to interpret the basic data. I’m using Google Finance in this tutorial, but I’ll use many other tools in the future as well. (Feed and Email readers: click here if you cannot see the video)
I really would appreciate your feedback as I plan on incorporating video tutorials on this blog more heavily in the future, and would like to know how to make it as good an experience as possible for the great readers of this blog. So? What do you guys think?
Richard
It sounds interesting, but I usually skip videos because I don’t have time to watch them.
Susan
Thanks, Preet. This is a good review of the basics and an excellent resource for beginning investors. Looking forward to the followup posts (P/E etc.). (Wish I could be that productive at 2:00am!
Preet
@Richard – good to know. Would limiting them to 5 minutes make them more appealing? Shorter? i.e. 2 minutes? Certainly some will have to be longer, but if I set a goal of 2 minute videos I can take some smaller topics and hit them fast…
@Susan – I have OCD (self-diagnosed!) and as such, I have a tendency to put the blinders on until I figure out something, or make it work. I missed posting on Tuesday because I was trying to figure out the best way to screencast (the process of making the video that tracks what’s going on on-screen), tweaking the settings on the software to make the video of high enough resolution and small enough size took forever… Unfortunately, I don’t have the computer skills that other bloggers might – so I have to learn the HARD way – i.e. trial and error until it works… but thanks for the encouragement. The next one will take me only slightly more time than the length of the video! :)

Hi Preet,
I like the new site layout much better as you have it today. I wish to receive more reading from you on topics such as how finance market works, dynamics of investors, real life success stories and more importantly tax savings stretegies in various situations.
I appreciate your input and knowledge sharing on regular posts.
Thanks,
M1KE
Love the video – keep them coming. Would like something on P/E ratio still don’t fully understand this.
Preet
@abc – Ask and you shall receive. I’ve been thinking about a great success story that I first heard about many years ago that will sit well with dividend investors – stay tuned…
@M1KE – I’ll put together something on P/E ratios shortly as well – thanks for the kick in the pants, it’s also been on my to-do list for too long…
Sean
Great blog, I really loved the video. I’m also looking forward to more in-depth P/E discussion.
Just a note on Google Finance, they announced today that they’re providing live quotes for US stocks. Hopefully the TSX follows! Also, they had more info on the NASDAQ listing of RIMM (F P/E, Beta, Inst. Own, etc.) that were missing from the TSX listing.
Richard
2 minutes would make it more likely that I would watch – it’s mostly about how it compares to reading a blog post. If I expect something to be very informative and it’s short it may take less time than reading a long post (a couple of days ago I checked http://www.bizlaunch.ca and watched a few of the sidebar videos because they’re short but effective). Usually I don’t expect to spend 15-30 minutes on one blog post unless it has something that I want to act on.
To contradict myself, I did watch the latest episode at http://www.helpmybusinesss.com today because it’s different from all the blogs I read. It all depends on the context and what I’m expecting – if you have transcripts below the video the readers can choose what they like best.
Btw, I hope you don’t underestimate the number of readers who are interested in technical stuff – there’s a lot of blogs that will tell you why index funds are good but not many have this much detail about tactics.
Preet
@Sean – thanks for the tip, I should’ve used the Nasdaq quote in retrospect. The same applies for many other features, which I will profile in the future, so I will use US stocks in the future.
@Richard – thank you for the note, I appreciate it.

It’s “without further ado”, not adieu.
Adieu,
Bill
Preet
@Bill – fixed. Thanks
Duncan
I subscribed to the newsletter and received one today. But nowhere on that subscribe page did I find the “download Canada’s EFTs” option. I checked again to see if I missed it. Nope. Could you advise me?
Preet
Hi Duncan, in your email program you may have to make sure that you allow images to be displayed. That should do the trick. If not, just email me and I’ll send a copy over. Thanks!
